Recycle Your Mobile Phone

Rotary re-cycling mobile phones for Charity

Rotary International have teamed up with Recycle Your Mobile to raise funds for various causes including Kids Out, National Children's Hospices, Air Ambulance and others.

What happens to your unwanted mobile phone?
There are literally millions of unwanted mobile phones in the UK alone. The environmental impact of dumping these handsets into our already over-stretched landfill sites is extremely damaging. We aim to collect as many of these unwanted mobile phones and re-process them for re-use where possible.

All handsets, batteries chargers and accessories received wll be checked and tested to help decide whether to process the unit for re-sale or to strip it down for its component parts. The handsets that have reached the end of their useful life in the UK can offer a low-cost solution to users in developing countries who cannot afford to buy a brand new handset.

Working handsets are cleaned, tested and re-packaged ready for export. Handsets which are faulty and beyond repair are stripped for any useful parts which can be re-used. These include, cases, keypads, buttons, antennas, microphones etc.

Anything that cannot be re-use is environmentally recycled through one of our many recycling partners. The over-riding aim is to avoid sending waste to landfill, where it causes most damage to the environment.

Why recycle your mobile phone?
There are a number of highly toxic components used in the manufacture of the current generation of mobile phones.

EU legislation is currently under proposal that will put the onus onto the manufacturer to avoid the use of such toxins in the future but currently there are millions of handsets in circulation that pose a threat to the environment if not recycled responsibly.

There are also a number of valuable materials used in the production of mobile phones and they contain components that can be re-used if carefully removed.

Nicad batteries contain Cadmium, a dangerous toxic and carcinogenic substance. The quantity in landfill sites is significant and the inevitable effects of Cadmium leaking into the surrounding soil cause considerable toxic contamination. We ensure that the operator has a special license to handle this kind of waste.

Alongside Cadmium, some mobile phones contain substances that are amongst the 10 most dangerous known to man.

Donate your unwanted mobile
Ensuring that your unwanted mobile phone doesn't end up in landfill is simple. If you have an old mobile phone why not do a good deed and donate it to charity.

Thank You !
